Topic/Skill: Reading and Verb Forms

Feedback provided to tutee: While over the months I have been talking with Tina she has improved in many different ways; However, there is one area she has consistently struggled with, verb forms. She tends do do fine at deciding which work verb would work best in a sentence but struggles to use the correct form of said verb in the sentence. To work on this for this meeting I prepared several worksheets for her to complete. The first was similar to ones I have had her complete in the past, consisting of a number of sentences with blanks and verbs next to the blanks leaving her to decide on the correct form of the verb to use in the blank. She did well enough with the earlier questions but started to struggle later with the longer or more complex sentences. I then reviewed with her what she got right and what she got wrong. After this, I had her practice her reading skills. I provided her with a passage that was at an appropriate difficulty for intensive reading. I did much better on gauging the difficulty of the text I was providing to her. She understood about 70% of the text, but with some guiding questions she was able to figure out the rough meaning of the whole text. I felt this was much better than the last time I tried a reading exercise with her and it proved to be too easy.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Even though this technically would have been my last tutoring session required for my TEFL certification I believe that I am going to keep up with tutoring my current tutees. In recent weeks since the new semester has started I have notice that the quality of tutoring I have been giving has slipped tremendously. Both from lack of time to prepare lessons, and from forgetting my training as a teacher from my TEFL course. In the coming weeks I hope to reaffirm myself in the ways of teaching and review all of my old material. Between continuing tutoring and reviewing the material from my TEFL course I hope to improve and more importantly retain my teaching ability and still feel prepared when my time comes to teach overseas.
