Topic/Skill: Reading

Teacher Presentation: Dr. Angel Rios

Classroom Management: Students are socially distanced because of COVID. The article is put on the board and Dr. Rios walks around the room as he speaks. Students are free to ask questions and do not need to raise their hand. Dr. Rios asks leading questions that make students expand on their ideas.

Materials: Online article projected onto the screen, zoom

Student Participation: students read paragraphs from the article and answer vocabulary questions. Students also answer questions about the article.

Feedback Provided: Dr. Rios gives feedback such as “you’re right”, “absolutely”, or sometimes “you’re a little bit ahead, let’s go back” if students are jumping to other parts of the article. Dr. Rios also correctly mistakes. One student said, “undepends” and Dr. Rios jumped in explaining you need a helping verb and would say “cannot depend” instead.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned that your energy is very important. Students in Dr. Rios’s class were very engaged and very willing to participate, and I think it was because he was very upbeat and constantly moving around and interacting with them. I also learned to be patient. Dr. Rios stayed on one question for 5 minutes to let the student think about it. He didn’t let the student give up by just jumping in with the answer. Instead, he asked leading questions that got them to the right answer and rephrased himself to be more clear.
