Topic/Skill: Grammar- Infinitives/ Gerunds

Teacher Presentation: Dr. Rios gave a lecture explaining the different uses of infinitives while quizzing students on the material along the way.

Classroom Management: Dr. Rios maintained a very positive atmosphere in the class and actively engaged with his students throughout by asking questions and providing verbal feedback.

Materials: Computer, Projector, White board, Textbook PDF

Student Participation: To start the lesson Dr. Rios had the students break into groups to discuss several questions from the textbook that would encourage them to use infinitives in their answers. Such as, "What are three things you must do this weekend?" Dr. Rios also made sure to ask each student to read aloud from the text or provide example sentences at least once.

Feedback Provided: Dr. Rios provided constant verbal feedback throughout the lesson. Whenever a student misspoke he would politely correct them and ask them to repeat their statement.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I feel that this first observation has already helped me in my understanding of how to lead a class. By watching Dr. Rios' class I believe that I have gained a greater understanding of how gauge the pace I should be teaching at based on the students understanding of the material. Furthermore, observing this class has helped me learn how to more effectively answer students' questions in a way that benefits their understanding of the material rather than just giving them an answer. Though, my favorite part of Dr. Rios' teaching style that I hope to implement later on when I begin teaching is his method of giving quizzes. He allows his students to have multiple attempts on quizzes so they can have the opportunity to practice the given material again later. However, unlike many of the instructors I have previously had in my own language courses he does not keep your highest score, he averages your score from all attempts at the quiz. So, this allows students get more practice by retaking the quiz while still encouraging them to to study for it rather than retaking it until they get one good grade. I think this is a great approach to quizzes because it not only decreases the students' stress from fear of failing a quiz, but also further encourages them to practice and study outside of class.
