Charlie - CP#1
Date/Time: Friday, May 7, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Location: La Florida, Tallahassee
Topic Discussed: Introductions and Getting to know each other, Background
Cultural and/or Linguistic Topics you and your partner learned: Saleh and I spent this first session really just getting to know each other. When I arrived, he immediately offered to pay for my muffin at La Florida and I learned that, in Arabic culture, it is not uncommon for men to fight for the checks after dinner. He was partaking in Ramadan and could not eat or drink while we were together and I got to learn a lot more about this interesting religious practice. As stated by Saleh, the primary reason he practices Ramadan is to feel what the poorest people around the world feel every day. It is meant to show that we are all equals on this planet. We talked a lot about our hobbies and our family backgrounds and he told me about his 3 sisters and loving parents that were supporting him on his journey to get a degree in Industrial Engineering, which is a highly sought after profession in Kuwait. We shared somewhat similar tastes in music and it was interesting to hear about some of his favorite things to do in Tallahassee.
