Charlie - TS#5

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 19, 9:00 A.M.

Location: Zoom

Topic/Skill: Grammar/Vocabulary in Use / Maintained Discussion

Feedback Provided to Tutee: We began this class by going over various minor mistakes that DoJun had made in his speech during the last class that I had time to listen to later that day. I wrote these sentences/grammatical errors out on a sheet and had DoJun read me what he had initially said. We then went over these errors together and worked together to come up with a more sound sentence or statement. This lesson was based around coffee so we then went into many of the terms and phrases that might be used while in a coffee shop. I had him do a Word Match for 5 minutes and then provided him feedback on any that he had misunderstood and we had a conversation about why certain words meant certain things.

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: As of this session, I really feel like DoJun and I have started to click. We literally spent the first 30 minutes just having a normal conversation about life (as I periodically corrected him on grammatical errors) which I think was very helpful for him. I realized that tutoring and teaching is largely based around the relationships you are able to build with your students. I learned a lot more about the Korean culture and he told me more about Buddha's birthday and how it is celebrated in South Korea. We talked about his fascination of Buddhist temples, despite the fact that he is not Buddhist himself. It was interesting to hear about different dedications to the religion, even within his family.
