Topic/Skill: Casual Business Conversation / Idioms and Usage
Feedback Provided to Tutee: For this tutoring session, I created a dialogue that DoJun and I went through together. This dialogue included 14 various idioms that are commonly heard in every day talk in a business-like setting. As we read through together, I would provide feedback on various mispronunciations and phrases that he struggled with. After finishing, I allowed DoJun to identify the various idioms that were used in this script. Before giving him answers, I would give him the flexibility to figure out the answer himself. If he was really struggling, I would use metaphors and examples to help guide him to the answer. I provided him with the script we went over after our session, along with examples and definitions of each idiom so that he could go over them. Next class, I intend on allowing him to practice these idioms in use.
Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: I learn more and more about DoJun and South Korean culture in each of our sessions. Today, we talked about the cultural differences between South Korea and America when it comes to wearing masks and complying to government regulations. DoJun noted that in South Korea, the people seem to be much more okay with compliance for things like masks whereas, in America, I noted that people are much more wary of their freedom and rights being violated by regulations such as masks. DoJun said that one reason Koreas are so used to wearing masks is due to the smog and dust that comes from China. I learned about the temporary names, tae-myung, that Koreans typically use for their children until they settle on a good name. DoJun's daughter's name will be yeol-mu until they settle on something else. Regarding tutoring, I became more comfortable today with guiding DoJun to the answers of questions rather than simply telling him the answer when he did not understand something.
