This past week, I observed Ah-young Kim's listening class. I believe that one of the most admirable teaching traits that Kim has is her ability to effortlessly and effectively teach a hybrid class in which half the students are in person and the other half are attending through Zoom. She is able to do this by incorporating a visual lesson that is accessible to all students. Although this class is focused on improving the students' listening skills, it is still important to provide a visual guide because all students have different preferred learning approaches. Kim showed the class a video about the morality and whether or not murder is ever excusable. This was an interesting video in which the students can learn about how Americans perceive this topic and how it may challenge their own cultural perceptions. Kim would pause throughout the video and jot down vocabulary words that students do not know in order to expand their knowledge and understanding of the topic. At the end, Kim asked for feedback about the difficulty of the videos to gage the type of content she should incorporate for future classes.
