Elaine CO #3
For my third class observation, I attended Olivia's listening class. Coincidentally, I spotted my conversation partner in the class! During this class, Olivia was going over the topics of mass mobilization and mob mentality with the students. I thought this was a very odd topic to use for teaching English, but I can see how it does spark more interest and more stimulating conversations among students who are in their 20s and early 30s. Olivia began the class by providing present-day examples such as the currently ongoing protests in Colombia. She then read over some theory behind protests and what is socially needed in order for them to form. For the second half of the class, she sent the students into breakout rooms where they would watch and listen to a series of videos about the Arab Spring. Interestingly enough, while a good amount of the students are Middle Eastern, some of them were not familiar with the Arab Spring.
