To be fully honest, I felt totally clueless coming into my first tutoring session because it was during the first week of our TEFL course. My tutee is an 11 year old boy whose family came to America from South Korea two years ago. He currently lives in New Orleans, Louisiana and goes by his American name, Dave. I call him Dave because that is what his mom presented him to me as and that is how he introduced himself, although I would personally prefer to use his real Korean name. When I first Dave, he was very responsive to me and seemed motivated for our tutoring sessions. After I asked him basic questions that were appropriate for his age, I decided to give him a writing prompt about his everyday routine to gage his writing and grammar levels. I immediately recognized some mistakes and told his I would take time to correct them and have grammatical explanations for him for our next tutoring session. This allowed me to have something ready for our next session. Afterwards, I gave him a short reading passage and found that he is an exceptional reader. He then took the initiative to ask about what a few of the words meant and this was a great opportunity for me to begin creating a vocabulary chart in which I provide the definition, part of speech, pronunciation, and a picture example.
