Feedback provided to tutee: Je-won did an excellent job grasping new concepts related to nouns and articles. We also went over a review of material we practiced in the previous session, which he remembered.
Lesson about tutoring and/or tutee learned: Grammar Lesson (describing nouns)
Tutee: Je-won Lee
In today's tutoring session, we focused on nouns and articles. As mentioned in blog entries before, Je-won is very new to the English language. Je-won's mother told me she plans on sending me a photo of his textbook's table of contents, so I can align my sessions with the material he is learning each week in school. I decided to focus on expanding Je-won's vocabulary of classroom objects. Based on my own foreign language experience, classroom objects was the first aspect of the language I always learned in class. I also thought that it would be a great opportunity to incorporate the concept of articles into the lesson. We began by covering previous material such as colors and weather, and then transitioned to new vocabulary. I used a PowerPoint format for this session. For example, I introduced the word "pencil." We went over these terms multiple times. Then, I showed objects to him and asked what it was called. After Je-won successfully grasped the new terms, I built off of them. Instead of a simple "pencil," I would ask how many were shown in the image. This connects to his knowledge of numbers that he learned in his class. A simple "pencil" would then become "a pencil." From there, we built further on top of this. After he was grasping the ideas of articles, I would incorporate his knowledge of colors. "A pencil" would become "a yellow pencil" and so on. It should also be noted that for each new term I incorporated a simple sentence example.
