Feedback provided to tutee: For writing sessions, my tutee will answer the prompt and then I will type her writing, and we correct her mistakes together. When she correctly identified a mistake, I would give her praise. When she is struggling, I try to hint at the idea or give her options so that she can still get to the answer on her own.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Normally, I try to give her an example when we do writing prompts, but I’ve noticed that when I do that, her writing tends to be very much like the example. Instead, I will verbally ask her the prompt and tell her what she needs to write and give examples verbally of what she could write. For example, today’s prompt was “if you could be any age, what age would you choose and why?” I started by asking her what age she would want to be and then said, “okay now think about the things you could do at that age and write them down.” This way, she comes up with her own ideas rather than unconsciously copying what I wrote for the example.
