Topic/Skill: writing, fiction

Feedback provided to tutee: When correcting her writing, I would say a sentence and then make a face and say, “hmmm, something isn’t right,” and encourage her to try to find the mistake on her own. She is often able to and then I say, “good job!” or something of that sort. Sometimes, she would try to fix something that was right, and in that case, I gently say something like, “that part sounds good how you have it now, but what about this part?” and point out the area that is incorrect. This generally is all she needs to realize her mistake.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  She is on summer vacation now, and I have noticed that her attention span is shorter, as she spends most of the day playing and then has to sit down for an hour to do work. I’ve learned that the best way to keep her focused is to let her say what’s on her mind for a little bit and then redirect back to the writing activity. Usually, the interruption does not last long.
