Topic discussed: Favorite foods, Aziz's language progression
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: To start our discussion we carried over from the topic from the short writing assignment I had given him during our last tutor session. This is how I got to find out about a plethora of middle eastern, and more specifically, Kuwaiti cuisine. Aziz first told me about his favorite food, kabsa. It can vary greatly based on location but almost always contains rice, some kind of meat (e.g. chicken, lamb, beef, etc.), vegetables, and spices. It's most commonly served family style in large portions. Another fun fact I learned is that the word kabsa actually comes from the Arabic word for "to push or squeeze" since they try to fit so much in one pot. I then told Aziz about some of my favorite American and Taiwanese foods like chicken and dumplings, bao zi, and e zi jian. After that we briefly discussed the amount of progress he has made over the last couple months. I gave him a bit of encouragement telling him just how much more progress he'll make since his program is going to run until December. Lastly I finally got him to agree to meet me more than once a week, so hopefully from now to the end of the end of our time together I will be able to give him more effective support in his language learning journey.
