Topic/Skill: Listening Practice, Becoming a Father

Feedback Provided to Tutee: Today, we went through an article about becoming a father. I read through each of the 7 short paragraphs twice, giving DoJun time to take notes. Afterwards we went through and I had DoJun explain to me the summaries that he was able to get for each section. I would allow him time to formulate his thoughts but would jump in and make corrections when obvious mistakes were made and refer to specific sentences so that it made more sense for him. Once I realized that a few of the paragraphs may have been a little too high-level for him, I decided to share my screen with him and dissect the difficult vocabulary and grammar structures that he was struggling with. We ended with a discussion about his plans over the next couple of weeks for the baby!

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: DoJun is having a child tomorrow! Something I noticed about DoJun is that he does not express is emotions nearly as much as most Americans do, at least in terms of being nervous. He will be a father tomorrow, yet he seemed as mellow as any other day that we have met! I would be curious to see if other Korean people behaved in a similar way. I think that today's lesson may have finally been a bit too difficult for DoJun. The article was fairly short but I saw, early on, that DoJun was struggling to keep up with the script. This was probably due to the flowery language and complex grammar structures will I will probably primarily try to avoid moving forward. I wanted DoJun to just try to summarize the paragraphs that I was going through but I saw that obtaining complete accuracy was important for him. When we went back and I stressed the importance of just trying to summarize each paragraph, he did much better at giving a succinct and precise description of what was being said.
