Topic/Skill: Listening Practice, Dictocomp - The Office
Feedback Provided to Tutee: Today, DoJun and I did a dictocomp of a scene selected from the popular American sitcom, "The Office". I started the session by only showing the first 30 seconds of the clip and asked DoJun what he thought may happen in the rest of the scene. This allowed him to think about situational clues and we had a discussion around a few of the things happening in the scene. I explained to him what Chilis was and why this seemed to be a business interaction that they were involved in. We then went into the dictocomp for which I would rewind once for every line item that he needed to go back over. Periodically, I would give him hints within the script or explain what various crucial terms or phrases meant.
Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: DoJun finally had his child! I am still intrigued by the way that he is handling this whole situation. He seems much calmer than I would be in his situation. I certainly do not feel that I would have time for trainings in a foreign language if I had just had a baby 2 days before. I can tell that living up to commitments is important to him in his life as he has only had to reschedule with me once and, even then, he was extremely respectful and apologetic. In today's dictocomp, I saw that DoJun struggled the most in places where the language was more casual and less pronounced. It was interesting to see what kind of word associations he made for phrases that he did not fully comprehend. The theory that advanced foreign language learners only comprehend around 70% of what they hear seemed to hold up as there were certainly areas that he missed that were crucial to the meaning of the dialogue.
