Date/Time: Monday, June 14, 9:00 a.m.

Location: Zoom

Topic/Skill: Sarcasm in Context

Feedback Provided to Tutee: Today, DoJun and I explored the concept of sarcasm. We started with a video from Ken Verified which exhibited a teenager that used extremely exaggerated forms of sarcasm. I then asked DoJun what he thought our lesson was going to be about (which he guessed correctly!). I then gave him a brief lesson on various types of sarcasm that are typically seen in casual English conversations and explained scenarios for each. I created 4 real-world examples that we went through so that he could see not only where sarcasm would usually be found but what words you are supposed to stress when you are being sarcastic. After going over the basics of sarcasm, I then let DoJun take the wheel and come up with sarcastic phrases himself. We used funny pictures that allowed him to be creative and come up with his own statements and then went through dialogues where he personally identified where sarcasm could be found in each. Throughout the whole lesson, I provided him feedback on the various usages of sarcasm and explained why and how sarcasm would be used in each situation.

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: In this lesson, it was funny watching DoJun grasp the concept of sarcasm. While he had certainly heard of sarcasm before, this concept was obviously much lesson common in Korean culture. He even noted that some of the statements sounded rather mean as a few of them were meant to poke fun at the imaginary conversation partners. Using funny pictures to have DoJun create his own forms of sarcasm turned out to be a great way to practice this activity! DoJun was extremely engaged and we found ourselves laughing at the pictures that I had chosen for this activity. This would a great way to engage students of any age/skill level!
