Topic/Skill: Bringing it all together! - Idioms, Reduced Pronunciations and Sarcasm - Baby Conversation

Feedback Provided to Tutee: In our final session, I wanted the lesson I created to be a culmination is as many of the topics that we have learned over the past couple of months as possible. Therefore, I decided to create another script that we went through together and did a dictocomp with DoJun. We started the lesson by going over his question that he had about the subjunctive past tense, which I had time to look up in between sessions. I still had trouble completely understanding what DoJun was having trouble with but I felt that he had a better understanding after we went through it in more detail. We then went into the dictocomp. I instructed DoJun to no worry about every individual detail of the script as we went through it and to mainly just gather the ideas and mood of the conversation, which he did! After reading through it 3 times, we went back over it and I had DoJun dissect the entire script while providing him with linguistic support where necessary. We even had a few good laughs when going through the sarcastic remarks in some parts of the dialogue. At the end, we went over difficult grammar and vocabulary and I allowed DoJun to ask any questions he had about the script.

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: I can't believe that today was our last session. It seems like not too long ago that DoJun and I were just getting to know each other. I have found that, through the medium of education, DoJun and I were able to form a very real connection and relationship with each other. He even expressed interest in meeting up with me and showing me his hometown if I ever had the chance to visit South Korea. This, I think, is the part of teaching that I value most. At the end of our session, DoJun and I just talked for around 20 minutes about plans that each of us had in the future. I continue to learn about Korean culture and some of the activities associated with having a newborn baby in Korea. DoJun's mother recently gave them 5 names to choose from that a paid "name-chooser" (as stated by DoJun) gave them. DoJun was then given the responsibility of choosing between these 5 names and it looks as if Seo-yool is going to be their daughter's name. Overall, this experience with DoJun made me exponentially more comfortable within a teaching role and truly made me excited to continue down this path of TEFL and multicultural education.
