Topic/Skill: Grammar Mistake Correction, Idioms in Context

Feedback Provided to Tutee: At the beginning of class, DoJun and I started by going over pronunciation errors that I had heard in the last class along with any grammar mistakes that were made. When it came to sentences that were incorrect, I allowed him to figure out what could possibly be wrong with each one. This allowed him to make self corrections and hopefully aided in his retention of the subject. As we went through the various situational idiomatic expressions, I really wanted to give DoJun autonomy within the lesson so that he could express himself in his own way. However, I would also chip in periodically and offer alternative ways that he could answer various questions.

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: As I was tutoring DoJun on his pronunciation errors, I realized that it was more important to correct him on words that have a different meaning when pronounced incorrectly. I found that, even after correcting him many times, it is only natural for him to continuously mispronounce certain words that are difficult due to his native Korean tongue. I also saw that DoJun really enjoyed the chance to put the idioms we just learned into use. It forced him to think in a different way and, as we cruised through the list, I watched as he became more fluent and confident in his speaking. Hearing him use the idiom "to see eye to eye" on his own in different lesson was a testament to the progress he is making.
