During this tutoring session with Dave, I decided to attempt another reading comprehension practice, but from a grade 8 level. I figured it was appropriate to advance the reading level in order to challenge him. This was not as successful as I expected. The reading passage was about fleas and included scientific terms that he was not yet familiar with like acid, theory, coincidence, artery, hypothesize, and speculate. A lot of the new vocabulary words did not even come from the reading passage, and instead they came from the reading comprehension questions. Dave was therefore not able to confidently answers the questions because he either did not understand what he was being asked, or he did not understand the multiple choice options. We took our time going through this passage, but I made sure to ask how he felt about it after he finished. He admitted that it was too hard for him, and I promised I would tone it back down in the future.
