Topic discussed: American and Korean culture
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: An area I found interesting was him expressing food in the United States, but not in the traditional sense. In prior meetings, we talked about American and Korean food, but he noted how food in Korea was something he really missed. He said that even though he tried to make the food he would make in Korea, it would never taste the same. I had never actually thought about that before -- how food, even made with the same ingredients, still could not taste the same. It was a really enlightening conversation. He also talked about his experiences with miscommunication. His area of miscommunication came from a car accident he had in Tallahassee. The communication pattern following a car accident is quite different between the United States and Korea. Communication patterns are always incredibly interesting to learn about. Based from this initial conversation, we also talked about driver's licenses. He expressed that in Korea it is more common to receive a driver's license later than in the United States. This did not surprise me, as even I think that Americans learn to drive quite young.
