Topic/Skill: IELTS Writing
Feedback Provided to Tutee: Hussam and I worked on a lesson about short response writing. This lesson consisted of an activity that resembled a writing portion of the IELTS exam where students are prompted with a controversial idea and must defend their opinion on the topic. Hussam was given a topic prompt about if he believes the use of technology in education is beneficial or harmful to academic growth. We talked through his observations and during his composition. Most of the corrections during this portion of the lesson where minor grammatical corrections with his observations and looking into the transitional words and phrases that were used to ensure that they felt natural and were as correct as possible.
Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: This was a great opportunity to see Hussam approach a question with controversial writing prompts like these. The tricky part to prompts like this for his exam is that the prompts are very random and Hussam is not always comfortable creating ideas describing these topics. This can be very influential to how easy writing observations can be. Normally the prompt asks the student to pick one side and this can be difficult.
