Topic/Skill: Illustrative Writing, descriptive writing

Feedback Provided to Tutee: Today, Hussam and I had a lesson about illustrative and descriptive writing. He is wanting to continue his practice for his IELTS exams, specifically his writing abilities. One of the writing tasks for the IELTS Exam is describing a graph or infographic, so I made a a power point presentation with several pictures with the task of writing a descriptive passage about each one. Since Hussam if fairly advanced, the images that I chose varied quite a bit with some imagery from science lab scenarios and field work images. Most of the corrections were adjusting modal verb use and correcting article usage and making sure that the verb conjugations and their subject matched throughout the lesson.

Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: Hussam is a Chemical Engineer so throughout this lesson, he would make comments about some of the science imagery and situations I used for the activity. He was excited to try and apply his English skills to write and speak about real-life situations that he will deal with in his future studies and career. Hussam also approaches learning English with a lot of structure and this can make some activities difficult when trying to achieve a greater fluency. The message is always present and clear, but sometimes in his efforts to expand his thoughts, he might not know the best way to navigate that and will refrain from doing so. I hope that we can get more comfortable with expressing tough thoughts, even if they are incorrect at first.
