Feedback Provided to Tutee: Today, Hussam and I completed another lesson about the writing portion of the IELTS exam. This lesson consisted of an activity that resembled a writing portion of the IELTS exam where students are prompted with a graph or data set and are asked to write 250 words about the information presented in 30 minutes. Hussam was given a graph showing radio and television audience levels throughout the day and how they fluctuate. We talked through his observations and during his composition. Most of the corrections during this portion of the lesson where minor grammatical corrections with his observations and looking into the transitional words and phrases that were used to ensure that they felt natural and were as correct as possible.
Lessons about the tutoring and/or the tutee that you learned: This was a great opportunity to see Hussam approach a question and observe how he plans to answer writing prompts like these. The tricky part to prompts like this for his exam is that the graph or data set given can be any style or on any topic. This can be very influential to how easy writing observations can be. He has a very inquisitive mind and can always find something to say about to data. However, if the topic is on a subject that he is not very knowledgeable about, he can get frustrated expanding on his thoughts when he isn't familiar with the vocabulary surrounding it. He mentioned that this practice is beneficial for him so he can have opportunities to work through unfamiliar topics to learn how to describe them in neutral terms when he is unsure of more technical words to use.
