Topic/Skill: Roleplay activity, Free talk

Feedback provided to tutee: This meeting Tina and I started by doing brief roleplay activities. In the TOEIC speaking test there is a section in which students will be given a hypothetical situation and are expected to respond accordingly. Sometimes they are asked to provide a solution to a problem they have been given, at others they have to answer questions as if they responding to survey questions. Along with these scenarios we also practiced several others. Tina was a bit slow to start, but after she picked up a bit of steam she started doing pretty well. She still has problems determining if some nouns are countable or uncountable, knowing which verb form to use, and fully expanding upon her ideas. However; her fluidity of speech, while not by large margins, has improved. She has become more willing to talk during our meetings but still remains the most talkative after we finish studying and move on to free talk. While I wish she was more willing to speak over all, I am happy to see that she is comfortable with pushing herself to speak a bit faster and take more chances with her language learning. Rather than just sitting there in scared silence for forever.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I think at this point the main thing raising Tina's affective filter is the TOEIC. Since she seems to be able to respond fairly well when we just chat, I think either the narrow nature of the questions or the stressful thought of retaking the TOEIC is holding her back. To help this I think I am goin to try booking ending our sessions with free talk. I hope that if we are able to just chat for a bit first it will help get her in the right headspace for speaking and will in turn help when we move on to actually studying for the TOEIC.
