Topic/Skill: Reading comprehension, TOEIC Opinion Questions
Feedback provided to tutee: This session we worked primarily on reading comprehension and deterring the meaning of words based on the context they are in. I did my best to try to find some readings that would be considered intensive, but I must admit I ended up setting the bar a bit too low. Tina had a pretty easy time reading through the texts I provided, only having the occasion hang up on larger words. Though; I did take the few chances I had to have her guess the meanings of the words she did not originally know. She did well with extracting the meaning but what made me even happier was to see her speaking more and more. Her fluency has improved tremendously since we first began. While her number of grammar errors has increased slightly, I would call this a fair trade off for the time being for her increased confidence and fluency. After the readings we began working on TOEIC opinion questions again. These types of question have previously given Tina a lot of trouble. Even forgoing the time limit that would be in place were she actually taking the TOEIC she had a difficult time getting words out and developing her ideas. This time she did a much better job of filling her time and giving timely answers. As exciting as her increased fluency is, she still struggles somewhat with developing her thoughts into full arguments.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Being a fellow language learner really helped with todays session. Some of the problems Tina ran into today were the exact same problems I ran into when I was studying in Taiwan. This experience not only gave me the knowledge of how to explain certain concepts that had also confused me as a learner. But furthermore; express my comradery as a fellow learner to help lower her affective filter.
